Boxing hares, primroses & the rising Oak King
March’s Folkletter is shaped by the restless energy of early spring, when the fields come alive with boxing hares, primroses gather quietly at hedgerows, and the old story of the Oak King begins his return.
This is a month of movement and change. You’ll find nods to the famous March hares- leaping, chasing and striking across open land, long seen in folklore as symbols of fertility, wildness, and the stirring of something just beneath the surface. Alongside them come the first primroses, thought to guard doorways and mark the places where the fairy world draws near.
At the heart of it all is the turning of the season itself. As the spring equinox approaches, the Oak King rises in strength—bringing light, growth, and the slow unfolding of warmer days.
